Your questions: What are the numbers on your blog? How about ninemillion.org?

After getting back to my regular day job this week (in addition to daylight saving time and time zone work), I found a couple of emails asking…

“What are those numbers at the end of your blog tags?”

Tags: , , , . 786,613; 1,106,004; 1,264,772

As noted previously, I tracked the increases in references on Live Search when I added a new entry on my blog:

“And here’s an update on the quick search query on Live Search for DST in 2007: there’s now 280,783 results: that’s more than 100,000 additional results added in the last couple of weeks,  with more than 513,000 results (+100K) for DST alone. I’ll go out on a limb and estimate that we eclipse 1,000,000 by March 11, 2007.”

Well, turns out that a search on “daylight saving time” in 2007 tops out today at 804,229 results, with “daylight saving time” topped a million with 1,076,605 today (and the incorect “daylight savings time” at 1,337,264).

(And remember, we ‘fall back’ a week later this year, on November 4th.)

But here’s a number that should get your attention: ninemillion.org.

You can contribute to ninemillion.org with every search. Each time you search here, Microsoft will contribute to ninemillion.org, a UN agency-led campaign providing education and sports programs for the nine million refugee youth around the world.

You can also add the gadget to your Windows Live Space or Live.com by going here: http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=3b452693-c968-4838-bf19-47e3ebf903bd&l=1

Your questions: Getting Microsoft OS daylight saving time updates via WSUS

I have seen a couple of comments on getting the OS updates for DST from WSUS, so here are few Q&A on WSUS and Microsoft OS daylight saving time updates:

Q: Can the OS DST update be deployed via WSUS/SUS?

A.  Yes. The Windows updates were released on Windows/Microsoft Update and WSUS/SUS so administrators can deploy via those systems.

Q.  What DST related updates are available via WSUS today?

A.  As of February 27, 2007 the following were available for approval in WSUS

Critical Updates

Q.  I have synchronized the WSUS catalog but still do not see the OS updates – where are they?

A.  First make sure that updates with the classificaton of Update Rollups are selected under Options –> Synchronizaton Options.  On that same page the appropriate products (OS versions) should be selected as well.  Once those are confirmed to be in place make sure the catalog has synchronized without error.

With the synchronziation successfully completed, make sure that updates with the classification of “Update Rollups” are not filtered out from the view under Updates –> View frame –> “Products and Classifications”.

Q.  Why were the DST OS patches (929120 & 928388) not set up to be un-installable via WSUS (Removable=No)?

A.  It is not recommended to uninstall important OS updates (such as 929120 & 928388 updates) or security-related updates, because of the possible unknown state that it would leave updates in. These updates are dealing with system files and configuration; randomly interchanging or replacing previous versions could leave the system in an unstable state.  As a result, the Remove bit was set to No for these, and most all other updates available via WSUS.

Q.  Can the Remove feature be enabled for an update in WSUS if it came from the catalog set to “No”?

A.  No, the centrally managed removal will not be available, but the update can still be removed manually via Add/Remove Programs

Q: Can a customer deploy EHSA hotfixes for Win2K and Exchange 2K using WSUS?

A.  No, anything in mainstream works through WSUS.  WSUS will not deploy Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000 since they are EHSA fixes which aren’t available to everyone.

Q: Can a customer manually add an update, such as the Windows 2000 OS DST patch, to the WSUS catalog?

A.  No, that capability does not exist within WSUS.   It will only use the catalog provided by Microsoft, either directly or by way of another WSUS server.

Your questions: How do we get the daylight saving time OS updates via WSUS?

“How can customers leverage WSUS to obtain the daylight saving time OS updates?”

WSUS can only be used to push the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836 OS updates for Windows 2003 SP1 and Windows XP SP2.  It cannot be modified to push other updates.  If you are having difficulty seeing this update in WSUS, first make sure that updates with the classification of Update Rollups are selected under…

Options –> Synchronizaton Options.

On that same page the appropriate products (OS versions) should be selected as well.
