Your questions: Getting Microsoft OS daylight saving time updates via WSUS

I have seen a couple of comments on getting the OS updates for DST from WSUS, so here are few Q&A on WSUS and Microsoft OS daylight saving time updates:

Q: Can the OS DST update be deployed via WSUS/SUS?

A.  Yes. The Windows updates were released on Windows/Microsoft Update and WSUS/SUS so administrators can deploy via those systems.

Q.  What DST related updates are available via WSUS today?

A.  As of February 27, 2007 the following were available for approval in WSUS

Q.  I have synchronized the WSUS catalog but still do not see the OS updates – where are they?

A.  First make sure that updates with the classificaton of Update Rollups are selected under Options –> Synchronizaton Options.  On that same page the appropriate products (OS versions) should be selected as well.  Once those are confirmed to be in place make sure the catalog has synchronized without error.

With the synchronziation successfully completed, make sure that updates with the classification of “Update Rollups” are not filtered out from the view under Updates –> View frame –> “Products and Classifications”.

Q.  Why were the DST OS patches (929120 & 928388) not set up to be un-installable via WSUS (Removable=No)?

A.  It is not recommended to uninstall important OS updates (such as 929120 & 928388 updates) or security-related updates, because of the possible unknown state that it would leave updates in. These updates are dealing with system files and configuration; randomly interchanging or replacing previous versions could leave the system in an unstable state.  As a result, the Remove bit was set to No for these, and most all other updates available via WSUS.

Q.  Can the Remove feature be enabled for an update in WSUS if it came from the catalog set to “No”?

A.  No, the centrally managed removal will not be available, but the update can still be removed manually via Add/Remove Programs

Q: Can a customer deploy EHSA hotfixes for Win2K and Exchange 2K using WSUS?

A.  No, anything in mainstream works through WSUS.  WSUS will not deploy Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000 since they are EHSA fixes which aren’t available to everyone.

Q: Can a customer manually add an update, such as the Windows 2000 OS DST patch, to the WSUS catalog?

A.  No, that capability does not exist within WSUS.   It will only use the catalog provided by Microsoft, either directly or by way of another WSUS server.

What about the CRM updates?  I know they’ve been released for DST but I can’t find them in WSUS.  Am I looking in the wrong place or are they not there?

TX

If I run the DST  update, do I need to edit the registry also to put the update into effect?

No, if you apply the KB931836, you do not need to edit any reg settings.
