Who’s running Vista? Trek Bikes

Want to know some of the companies moving to Vista? Here’s a look at one well-known company, Trek Bikes. There’s a new case study now available, just posted on the Microsoft Case Studies site.  If you don’t know Trek, they are a major manufacturer and marketer of bikes and accessories with 1,800 employees worldwide. The company ships around a million bicycles each year. (Disclaimer: my 8-yr-old son has a Trek, and so does my wife: she’s been a Trek fan all her adult life). And now they’re an early pilot adopter of Windows Vista in their shop:

Trek recently upgraded to Windows Vista to help support its goal of bringing products to market more quickly and securely. “The Windows XP operating system was a solid performer for us, but Windows Vista will be a tremendous upgrade,” says Douglas Kotulski, Network Services and Support Manager for Trek. “It has multiple enhanced user and security features that work really well in our environment.”


I’ll be interested to hear more details as Trek moves to deploy Vista RTM broadly in their offices.

What I’ve read (110606)… and why bother to post the list

Someone asked why I bother to post my reading lists on to my blog.


In the course of my regular work, I talk to a lot of people inside the company (and outside, too). I often recall articles that have some relevance to the topic during the discussion. So, tagging articles of interest helps me to quickly find an article for later review and reference. (Windows Desktop Search has made that effortless for the articles and references I have in my archive). Del.icio.us has a feature that automatically posts the articles on to your daily blog, but I haven’t used elected to do daily postings.

News: Microsoft wraps up Office 2007

The Inside Office Online blog and CNET News report that Office is done today.



“Both Windows Vista and Office are slated for release to big businesses on Nov. 30. Microsoft has issued near-final test releases of Vista, but has not yet completed the final, or “gold,” code for the new operating system.


“As for Office 2007, the upcoming release sports some major changes from Office 2003, including new file formats and a radically revised user interface. In addition to those and other changes that have been known for months, Microsoft noted that it has also added a feature to Outlook to make it easier to send text messages to cell phones.”


The news is that Vista Enterprise is on track, too. Barring the ill effects of bad weather in the area all should be good.

Don’t Get Tricked: protecting your PC from being a Zombie

Last year, Microsoft teamed up with the FTC in the “Don’t Get Tricked on Halloween” campaign to crack down on illegal methods used by spammers to distribute unsolicited e-mail. As October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, only fitting that I replay this blast from the past… 



Timed to coincide with National Cyber Security Awareness Month and Halloween on Oct. 31, the “Don’t Get Tricked on Halloween” campaign alerts computer users to the threat of zombie computers and how to protect their personal computers (PCs) from being infected with malicious code. “The only way to slow the spread of zombies and other online threats is by going after them as resolutely and in as many ways as possible,” says Tim Cranton, director of Microsoft’s Internet Safety Enforcement programs.


Stop Zombie PC Attacks in their Tracks: Tips on how Internet users can prevent their computers from becoming zombies:



  • Use a firewall to protect computers from hacking attacks while connected to the Internet. 

  • Keep Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office programs up to date with security updates to shield computers from viruses, worms and other threats.

  • Use up-to-date antivirus software and antispyware software to help protect against the latest threats.

  • Beware of tricks designed to get people to download and install unwanted and sometimes destructive software. This software is sometimes distributed in non-commercial music downloads, file-sharing programs and free games.

  • Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files in e-mails from unknown senders.

The campaign so nice we promoted it twice. Or something like that.
