Remember: April 1st is not this year’s daylight saving time ‘spring forward’ date

If you did not apply the updates to your various PCs and devices as noted on our http://www.microsoft.com/dst2007 daylight saving time information site, but manually adjusted the time, please note that older devices may ‘spring forward’ on the first Sunday in April (the old beginning of DST).

As USA Today reports today…

“…a few new glitches might pop up this weekend. Daylight-saving time began three weeks early this year, causing a problem for thousands of older PCs, cellphones and other electronic devices. They were programmed to automatically switch the time on the traditional daylight time start date, this Sunday (on April 1st).

“And there may be more (glitches) on Sunday night. It’s likely that some consumers didn’t upgrade their older devices. Instead, they changed their clocks manually. That’s worked so far. But the devices are still programmed to change the time on the original daylight time start date. They will change the time by an hour unless that feature has been turned off.”

So, if you haven’t already updated your PCs and devices for daylight saving time, consider the following steps:

  • Verify the time and date programmed on your PCs and consumer electronic devices. Some older DVRs (ReplayTV, Tivo) and PDAs may need to be updated especially if they are not always connected to a network service.

  • Download the updates – visit http://www.microsoft.com/dst2007 for more details.

(ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley picked this up in her blog Beware false Daylight Saving Time resets on April 1.)

Your questions: What are the numbers on your blog? How about ninemillion.org?

After getting back to my regular day job this week (in addition to daylight saving time and time zone work), I found a couple of emails asking…

“What are those numbers at the end of your blog tags?”

Tags: , , , . 786,613; 1,106,004; 1,264,772

As noted previously, I tracked the increases in references on Live Search when I added a new entry on my blog:

“And here’s an update on the quick search query on Live Search for DST in 2007: there’s now 280,783 results: that’s more than 100,000 additional results added in the last couple of weeks,  with more than 513,000 results (+100K) for DST alone. I’ll go out on a limb and estimate that we eclipse 1,000,000 by March 11, 2007.”

Well, turns out that a search on “daylight saving time” in 2007 tops out today at 804,229 results, with “daylight saving time” topped a million with 1,076,605 today (and the incorect “daylight savings time” at 1,337,264).

(And remember, we ‘fall back’ a week later this year, on November 4th.)

But here’s a number that should get your attention: ninemillion.org.

You can contribute to ninemillion.org with every search. Each time you search here, Microsoft will contribute to ninemillion.org, a UN agency-led campaign providing education and sports programs for the nine million refugee youth around the world.

You can also add the gadget to your Windows Live Space or Live.com by going here: http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=3b452693-c968-4838-bf19-47e3ebf903bd&l=1

DST Support Central in Redmond, Day 5 – closing down

Live here from the DST Support Central in Redmond… it’s now 5:30 PM in our Redmond facility and all’s well, and we’re closing down our centre here (‘tho support remains live through our regular channels).

We’ve got about 80 people right now on our live DST chat room and we had very few people on our Live Meeting today. As Joris Evers reported today, we saw fewer problems than we planned for (as my Cub Scout son says, “be prepared”):

“The bulk of the problems arose for people who had not updated their computers or had decided to postpone patching to the last minute, according to Microsoft, which created a dedicated “DST Support Central” to help customers. The symptom: clocks running an hour behind because they did not automatically adjust.”

And as I noted, the systems I had the most difficulty with here in the support centre? The analogue clocks in our situation room were wrong at the spring forward.

DST Support Central in Redmond, Day 3

Live here from the DST Support Central in Redmond… it’s now 2:00 AM in our Charlotte facility and all’s well.

We’ve got about 60 people right now on our live DST chat room and we had very few people on our Live Meeting.

Interesting article today on MSN: How people feel about daylight-saving changes

“Americans’ clocks will spring forward three weeks earlier this year (2 a.m. Sunday, March 11), but more than half of Americans (54%) say they’re relaxed and haven’t really thought about the change, a new MSN/Zogby Poll shows.”
