It’s Time To Spring Forward An Hour in the US and Canada: Daylight Saving Time Arrives Sunday

Brace yourselves… it’s that time again.

That’s right: it’s the start of Daylight Saving Time in much of the US and Canada, as noted in more than 2,200 news articles today.

“Huh?  It’s not for a couple of more weeks,” one person said yesterday.

“Nope, it’s this weekend… we updated our products last year to account for the change,” I heard another manager say. (Nice to hear that the message got out. 😉

This year, DST in much of the US and Canada begins on March 9, several weeks earlier than in years prior to 2007. As you may recall, last year the US and Canada “sprang forward” a few weeks earlier than in past years in accordance with the US Department of Energy’s Energy Policy Act of 2005 that was passed into law. DST will end later than usual, on the first Sunday of November (in 2008, November 2); more details on the new DST start and end times can be found here). This results in a new DST period that is approximately three to four weeks longer than in previous years.

So what should you do to make sure that your computers are ready for the change?  If you use Microsoft Update on your PC at home, chances are you’re already covered.  The December Cumulative 2008 Daylight Saving Time and Time Zone Update for Windows should already be installed on your PC.  If you’re not sure, visit Microsoft Windows Update to check your PC and install important updates.  At work, if an IT Pro (aka ‘hero’) manages your network, chances are good that the needed updates have already been installed on your computers and devices automagically.

If you manage servers and a host of Microsoft software, visit http://www.microsoft.com/time for more details.  And visit the support web sites of any other software companies to see if you need to apply any updates – it’s not just Microsoft software that may require updates.  Keep in mind that it’s not just the US and Canada that made changes to DST and time zones: we have an upcoming change in Australia and others noted on the DST and Time Zone Hot Topics page.

In Australia, there are changes to Eastern & Central zones. Australia Eastern (New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania) and Central (South Australia) time zones will extend daylight saving and also harmonize start and end times commencing April 2008. From April 2008, daylight saving will end on the first Sunday in April and recommence on the first Sunday in October in all states.

For a summary of the status of product updates, we recommend that customers review the information on the Australia Eastern & Central 2008 Daylight Saving Changes page.  As noted there, the official Australian Government Time web site is a resource to prepare and educate end users and businesses.

In most cases, customer will find that these changes have been addressed when the latest cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems was applied (released December, 2007, as noted at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942763).  Some of the updates are not specific to the Australia Eastern and Central changes and can be applied immediately; other products (for example Office Groove) require manual adjustment after application of the time zone update to the host Windows operating system.

And remember: time is a precious thing. Never waste it.

Llamas and other helpful options for Valentine’s Day

Admit it: you don’t have a gift for that special someone tomorrow. (Hello… it’s Valentine’s Day.  My gift for my wife was rescuing her from an awkward spot late today, with apologies to attendees at TechReady.)

My old friend, Ben Calica, is working with a company that is doing a cool little something for Valentines Day.

Rather than the standard buy consumer goods, the company has set up a pathway to let people do something good in the name/spirit of their sweetie.

For example, rather than give a stuffed animal, give a needy family a Llama through Heifer.org.

Polka has a way to really treat your sweethearts to something memorable. Welcome to Random Acts of Love — the latest Polka initiative.

This year why not send your sweetie a special Polka-gram with a wonderful gift straight from the heart. Instead of that bouquet and candy box, why not plant some bulbs and buy a box of fair trade chocolates? That overpriced dinner? How about donating to your honey’s favorite charity and buy dinner for those less fortunate?

With our Random Acts of Love initiative, you can demonstrate your love in a unique, thoughtful way by substituting those tired Valentine gifts for something that will make a positive impact. There are lots of great choices and opportunities. We’re sure your Valentine will always remember this gift that can change lives around the world or make a difference right in your own home.

Sending a Valentine’s Polka-gram is free and it’s ok to send more than one!

All Random Acts of Love Polka-grams will be sent on February 14. Cruise on over to the Random Acts of Love and share the love: http://alpha.polka.com/love.php

Ben assures me that there is nothing nefarious here (he said as much ;).  Names will not be used for any ill gotten gain, they are just trying to be a conduit for getting some good done in the world.  (Caveat emptor.)  The company, Polka.com has done some random acts of kindness a couple of times before, helping a family after the San Diego wildfires and adopting families in over the holidays, and they are building it into who they are as a company.

Find out more about it at http://blog.polka.com/

Microsoft’s Danger-ous purchase

In the news today, one dangerous acquisition was approved: Microsoft is buying Danger

Robbie Bach announced the news in his keynote at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Spain. Full news release is included here on MSN Money Central

Taking steps to place its technologies in the hands of an expanding mobile consumer audience, Microsoft Corp. today announced the acquisition of Danger Inc., the company responsible for software and services powering popular consumer handsets. Microsoft also announced that several additional cutting-edge mobility companies worldwide will adopt and deploy Microsoft’s software and services.

With the acquisition of Danger, Microsoft will benefit from the company’s nearly 10 years of expertise with mobile consumers. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company provides services that allow people to keep in touch, stay organized and keep informed while on the go through real-time mobile messaging, social networking services, Web browsing and personal information management applications. Combining these services with Microsoft’s connected entertainment and mobile technologies will provide Microsoft with the tools to accelerate its work to create industry-leading entertainment and communication experiences for consumers.

Of note, Danger co-founder Joe Britt is ex WebTV and 3DO (I’m a proud alum), and along with Matt Hershenson are both ex Catapult (think Xbox Live over POTS, circa 1995).  I think that I still have Matt’s business card somewhere… ; )

Seven Years and Seven Habits…

A lot can happen in seven years

Nice to receive a cake, as it were… I received several notes and a couple of IMs today congratulating me on my anniversary, as today is my 7-year anniversary at Microsoft, a little less than a third of my career.

So before my next discussion at 5pm, I leave you with Seven Dirty Habits of Highly Effluent People, courtesy of Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame…

Obviously, I’m ripping off Stephen Covey, whose seven better-known habits got my attention not so much for their content, which I find suspicious, but for their surprisingly modest number, which I find manageable. Here then, are my “Seven Dirty Habits,” each gleaned from a worker I met on the show, and bolstered by true stories of personal enlightenment and lingering humiliation.

  1. Never follow your passion, but by all means bring it with you.
  2. Beware of teamwork.
  3. Vomit proudly and whenever necessary.
  4. Be careful, but don’t be fooled–safety is never first.
  5. Think about what you are doing–never how.
  6. Ignore advice such as “Work smart, not hard.” It’s dangerous–and moronic.
  7. Consider quitting.

One good turn deserves another, so here are seven manageable habits for maintaining focus on the customer experience and ultimately satisfaction…

  1. Know that customer service is really everyone’s job
  2. Make your customers feel like they are your top priority
  3. Understand the customer’s needs
  4. Jump through hoops for your customer
  5. Listen — and be willing to take a whack sometimes
  6. Learn from others (these are a few of the lessons from the Xbox Team)
  7. Most of all, Be Nice (one of Dalton’s Three Rules 😉

Have a good afternoon.
