CNET review: T-Mobile Dash vs. Motorola Q

Email this afternoon on my Smartphone: “I am thinking about switching providers. Which of the new Smartphones should I get: the Dash of the Q?”

OK, last Dash post until we get one: we decided this weekend that this is the phone for my wife.

As noted previously, the new T-Mobile Dash Smartphone is now available, and is proving to be quite popular. Now CNET has a review comparison between the Motorola Q and the T-Mobile Dash

“When it first debuted, the Motorola Q was undoubtedly a knockout. The Windows Mobile device was sleek and sexy, unlike any other smart phone before it, and generally delivered on performance. However, when you’re sitting there at the top, there’s always going to be someone who wants to knock you down, and let’s just say the T-Mobile Dash is ready for a fight. This new kid on the block is throwing up some big claims, with its own slim design, productivity tools, and wireless options.”

The winner in the review? The T-Mobile Dash with 63 total points, and the Motorola Q close behind with 58. Unless you’re on the Verizon’s 3G EV-DO network, the Dash is a good choice. It really depends on the provider coverage in your area – they are both great phones. If you need a Smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard, these are pretty good choices, and a little slimmer than the popular Cingular 8125, the new and popular Palm Treo 700wx smartphone on Sprint’s network.

Just released: New T-Mobile Dash Smartphone

T-Mobile Dash SmartphoneMSNBC has a quick review quick review from Gary Krakow on T-Mobile’s new Dash phone, a slick smartphone Krakow calls a “slick, new design… best-of-breed for Windows Mobile devices.” It’s so new that the phone is not yet on the T-Mobile site or on their press page. (Update 101306: The T-Mobile Dash press release is now available here.)

Says Krakow:

“The phone performed every task I asked it to do without any problem — a big deal for today’s, feature-laden smartphones. I have yet to find a program that makes the Dash trip up or miss a beat.

“It has handled all my remote e-mail, Web browsing and even some photography and music-listening duty with aplomb. The Dash is one of the best smartphones I’ve tested to date and definitely the most enjoyable Windows Mobile phone I’ve used.

“But don’t take my word for it.  Over the course of the past two weeks every person who has seen me use the phone has asked if they could look, touch, feel and play with it. I have never seen a cell phone receive that kind of reaction before.”

Disclaimer: this is on my short list of new devices. My wife was looking at getting a new phone with a larger screen and a QWERTY keyboard over her current Smartphone, and this should fit the bill. Originally we were looking at upgrading to the Motorola Q, but that model isn’t compatible on on our network.

Microsoft & Palm: Windows Mobile 5.0 to come on the Treo 700

Here’s today’s news of the Microsoft/Palm collaboration on the Treo 700 with Windows Mobile 5.0, as hinted at in Businessweek last week. See also the announcement on Microsoft.com. (Update 101006: this is an old link: please see this link for more on Windows Mobile on Palm devices.)

“Full product details will be disclosed when the product is available for purchase in early calendar 2006. Palm indicated that a Treo smartphone using Windows Mobile based on other wireless technologies was not anticipated to be released earlier than the second half of 2006.”

Waiting patiently until 2006… until then, I seriously am considering the Motorola Q Smartphone.
