Says Geek Squad: “[our] agents have one thing over Apple and Microsoft engineers. We spend most of the day talking to people.”

I twittered tonite (I can stop any time) that Matt Richtel wrote in his article in the Times yesterday, Industry Rethinks Moneymaking Software Practice

"Before they ship PCs to retailers like Best Buy, computer makers load them up with lots of free software. For $30, Best Buy will get rid of it for you.

"Robert Stephens, head of Geek Squad, said of removing preinstalled software, “We’ll give consumers what they want.”

Mr. Stephens of Geek Squad says he agrees with H. P. that the future is in allowing computer buyers to choose and download what they want. But he said he believed Best Buy, not H. P., was in the best position to help people choose what works for them because, he argued, the in-store technicians are in closest contact with them.

"Geek Squad agents have one thing over Apple and Microsoft engineers. We spend most of the day talking to people," he said.

Questions? Really?  In my experience at some retailers, rarely do I see any of the in-house support agents (such as Squad members) answering questions for the customers with the puzzled looks shopping in the computer department.

Road trip: I’ll be visiting a couple of local electronics retailers tomorrow as a customer to pick up a product.  Let’s see what happens.

Coffee and breakfast without the Musak

caferacer.jpg

I’m in a section of north Seattle called Ravenna, taking the morning off to take my youngest son to an appointment. although the waiting room’s seating is less than comfortable (little more than a low bench with a threadbare cushion) it is near the Café Racer.

It’s a cute place with young musicians in and out the door all morning, stopping in for coffee or tea, hosted by a lady who makes a mean breakfast sandwich. (Whilst I worked on my backlog of mail, she had the presence of mind to bring out pepper sauce… without having to ask.)

If you’re looking for the anti Starbucks and a place that has more character than your regular run of the mill place, this is worth a stop.

Gizmodo: AIM for Windows Mobile now available

Gizmodo reports today that AIM for Windows Mobile is now available as an RTM…

“It’s been in beta for the last few months, but for Windows Mobile users who’d rather not risk their phone to be a lab rat in a suit, AIM for Windows Mobile is now in final release form. If you are on your mobile now, just go to this link and hit “products” to make the download. If you are on a Windows Mobile device and you don’t want AIM, then we are truly, truly sorry for wasting your time. Feel free to drop by Brian Lam’s place for a personal apology via back rub any time. No, it won’t be strange at all. [AOL via MobileBurn]”

Of interest: Jerry Seinfeld reportedly in Microsoft’s new ad campaign

So. I’m having lunch, going through my mail when the phone rings…

“Did you hear? I read a report today that Jerry Seinfeld will star in Microsoft’s new ad campaign.”

Cool.

And the Chicago Trib reports that Jerry Seinfeld will appear with Bill Gates in the campaign…

“The new ad effort is expected to use some variation of the slogan “Windows, Not Walls,” according to several people familiar with the matter. Those people say the point is to stress breaking down barriers that prevent people and ideas from connecting. The campaign, said to debut Sept. 4, is one of the largest in the company’s history.”

We’ll see.

At TR7 with some down time? Consider a trip to Bainbridge Island

Coming to TR7 in Seattle and wondering what to do with a day off? sure, there’s plenty to do and see in Seattle but consider this: Hop the ferry to Bainbridge Island – the weather is quite nice this weekend (so far) and if you walk on to the boat, it’s a short walk into town for a quiet day. Nice shops, lots to see and very god food: lunch or dinner at the Winslow Way café (save room for dessert) or Nola’s.
