Your questions: Is DST changing in Venezuela this September?

I received a couple of questions today about the just-announced changes to DST in Venezuela…

“I just read that Venezuela which is apparently changing from GMT-4 to GMT-4:30 on September 1. If this is true, how might this affect DST for customers who use Caracas/La Paz as setting for timezone?”

I believe that they are referring to this Reuters news article (above) that states “Venezuela in September will turn clocks back by 30 minutes as it switches time zones to boost the amount of natural light to residents.”

clip_image001 “Reuters Oddly Enough: And Finally…” Play Video

I found on the ABN site (which I believe is the country’s official news agency) the actual news release on the DST change (and here in Spanish)…

“From next January 1st, 2008, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will have a new time zone that will allow to improve the Venezuelans’ performance on their daily activities.”

First off, this latest DST change for Venezuela isn’t integrated into the latest version of the OS update (available in KB 933360). (BTW, KB 933360 will be released on Windows Update on the 4th Tuesday of August. It is categorized as an Update Roll-up, same as last time with KB 931836, which means that it goes to Automatic Updates, more info available here.)

Second, Microsoft is currently working with representatives in the region to confirm the reports that Venezuela is changing its time zone on Jan. 1, 2008. Later this year we expect to release a cumulative DST and Time Zone Update for Windows that will set the correct dates as understood today for 2008. Customers with Automatic Updates enabled will receive those updates. Changes will include countries that have so far officially announced and approved their observance of DST entry/exit dates in 2008. We’re working with our engineering team on the schedule to include Venezuela in this upcoming update.

We currently maintain customer-ready guidance and information on DST and time zone changes at http://www.microsoft.com/dst2007 – this site is regularly updated with the latest information. Additional information on the most recent DST and time zone updates to the Windows OS can be found on my blog here.

Helpful tips and links on managing e-mail in Outlook, courtesy of the Crabby Office Lady

Last month I wrote a post on recommended strategies for managing email with Outlook.  I get a lot of questions from customers on recommendations on the best way to manage mail.  Since I first wrote about the Microsoft Office Crabby Office Lady I’ve had an opportunity to exchange a few mails with her.

Crabby Office LadyAs I’ve noted, Crabby (aka Annik Stahl) writes columns that are easy to understand and very entertaining. She provides answers to common (and not-so-common) Office questions that you don’t normally find in Microsoft Office Help. (Go to the Microsoft Office Assistance site and chances are you’ll find some interesting answers from her. One of my favourite videos is her response to the question “Microsoft Doesn’t Care?“)

Back to our story.

After searching I found a few items on managing E-mail on Office Online and in the Crabby columns, but I wanted more on managing email.  So, I sent a note to Crabby and asked for her tips on managing a flood of mail, as well as suggested articles and links.

“Managing e-mail” is a HUGE topic (as you well know)… I do cover this subject… within the contents of various columns.  Here is some other Office Online content that covers e-mail management:

“… there is so much information on our site that covers this large topic. Hope I’ve been of some help to you.”

Of course, a tremendous help as always.

My thanks to Crabby!

If you want to know more, you must get the The Microsoft Crabby Office Lady Tells It Like It Is… Secrets to Surviving Office Life. It’s a good thing.

Can’t get enough of Crabby?

Of interest: Windows Live on Nokia mobile phones

Yesterday, Microsoft and Nokia announced a deal to get Windows Live services onto Series 60 handsets (that run the Symbian OS), then later Series 40 phones.

“It’s not the first sign of detente between the two companies. Nokia has for some time licensed Microsoft’s ActiveSync technology for connecting to an Exchange e-mail server. Earlier this month, Nokia also said it had licensed Microsoft’s PlayReady mobile digital rights management technology. The handset maker also includes Microsoft’s Live Search in its mobile search service.

“[Steve] Berkowitz said Microsoft will continue to develop versions of Windows Live services for its own Windows Mobile operating systems as well as slimmed-down WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) versions that can run on a wide array of phones.”

Mobile ScreenshotYou can get Windows Live for mobile on many mobile phones, offering Search, Mail and IM today… there are a couple of public Windows Live Mobile betas including Windows Live Messenger Beta for mobile — mobile instant messaging — and the more comprehensive Windows Live.com for mobile Beta.

Of interest: Live Labs’ Photosynth images from the latest Endeavour Space Shuttle mission

Of interest: Benjamin J. Romano posts on the Seattle Times blog that Microsoft Photosynth was used to process images from the latest Endeavour mission.

“A few days before the shuttle launched, Microsoft posted several sets of photographs of the shuttle in the Vehicle Assembly Building and on the launch pad. They were in the company’s new 3-D photo-viewing environment, Photosynth.

“The new collection includes images of the shuttle captured Aug. 10 before it docked at the International Space Station. “Endeavour did a complete somersault enabling astronauts to photograph the shuttle’s bottom-side. The photos were then sent back to NASA for analysis and later shared with Microsoft LiveLabs to compile a ‘synth,'” a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail. The new photo collection can be accessed here.”

Adam Sheppard, GPM in Live Labs, posted about the collaboration with NASA, as Space Shuttle astronauts photographed the shuttle (including the damage on the bottom).
