New Windows Live services in beta: Photo Gallery and Folders

This week, the Live Experience team opened the beta programmes for a couple of new services for Windows Live: Windows Live Photo Gallery beta and Windows Live Folders beta. (More news on all Windows Live betas is available at http://get.live.com/betas…)

From Chris’ press pass article…

“Windows Live Photo Gallery is an upgrade to Windows Vista’s Windows Photo Gallery, offered at no charge, and enables both Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 customers to share, edit, organize and print photos and digital home videos. The initial managed beta of Windows Live Photo Gallery beta is available today in nine markets around the world so far (including the United States (English and Spanish), China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, and Spain), with more to come. We’re really proud of this service because it’s so easy to share photos – it’s really as easy as sending an e-mail. You can also easily publish your photos to your Windows Live Spaces.

“We’re also releasing Windows Live Folders into managed beta today, which will provide customers with 500 megabytes of online storage at no charge. We see this limited managed beta in the United States right now as just a starting point for us, and we’ll begin collecting input from beta users during the testing process, which will be useful when developing future versions of the service. Like I’ve said, it’s very important to us that we give our customers multiple options for connecting to family, friends and information, and share information and other things with the people they care about the most.”

PC Magazine covered the announcement, as did the Seattle Times, and you can sign up for Windows Live Folders here. Windows Live Photo Gallery is (so far) open to a limited number of testers.

Live search, New York to London: “Ya can’t get there from here”

From my friend, JuliAnn… many thanks.

“This is why the Internet is the greatest media created in history. Take 60 seconds to do this… I guarantee you will show someone else…it’s too funny not to.

1. go to www.google.com

2. click on “Maps”

3. click on “Get Directions”

4. type “New York” in the first box  – (the “from” box, before the double arrows)

5. type “London” in the second box  – (the “to” box, after the double arrows)

6. hit the Get Directions button to the right of the “to” box

7. read down to step #24 in the directions it gives you.

So I followed the steps, and found that — contrary to that famous skit on SNL — you can “get there from here”…

I do like a sense of humour.

So I ran the same search on the Directions and Maps on Live Search…

Your questions: How do you compile your reading summaries?

WRT the reading summaries in the “articles I’ve read” posts (here, too), I was asked…

“how do you compile these? Are you using a special tool? I’m looking for something that lets me just push a button every time I read an interesting article and save it to a log file where I can automatically create summaries like yours.”

Yes, I currently use del.icio.us to tag articles and stories.  I find it to be an easy way to quickly archive pages and stories of interest for later reference. I installed the del.icio.us buttons for Internet Explorer that allows me to “Tag This Page” I want to save. Along with sving the page, I add notes to the link by selecting text in the article prior to saving the page.

And since the items are listed in HTML on my del.icio.us webpage display, it’s easy to cut and paste entries from del.icio.us directly into my blog posts and emails, and access from my mobile browser.

My goal is to use Windows Live Favorites, which allows you to “access, organize and discover favorites anywhere.” But it doesn’t yet (at least as I was unable to find) provide a simple HTML view of the content links and descriptions I’ve tagged, as available in del.icio.us.
