Oh, Canada, meet Independence Day: a reading list for a holiday week

Tomorrow is Canada Day so a shout out to my friends north of the boarder as well as the many local Canucks we have on campus, at the Microsoft MCDC and MS Canada. Canada is so much more than Bob and Doug McKenzie (I’m shoring my age).

And with a nod to the Office OFFline Web Comic and to please the kids on this reading list day (published late, or early as I don’t expect to post much of anything later in the week), here’s a little something that I have fun with at home, with reference to the article “Hey Bill, sorry I kept your book since high school” in the Seattle Times Newspaper.  Seems that Bill Gates used the latest word-processing technology available at the time to create his own ex libris: an IBM Selectric typewriter with a rotating typeball that produced italic (by Rami Grunbaum)…

Good to note the importance that employees placed on getting feedback from Bill at Microsoft (Joel Spolsky has a very interesting account of what it was like working as a program manager for Microsoft in 1992).

Have a good week… now on to the reading list:

Bill Gates Retirement Party: Things No One Gives Microsoft Credit For (But Should) — “Microsoft is rarely credited for being why mainstream tech has come this far—a computer on every desk, the explosion of the internet, even the idea of a common UI across applications. My weekly reading list, with more on bananas, dogs watching pay-per-view and iPhone subscriber costs

This week has been a busy one, with the kids finishing school and prepping for summer break, reviews of upcoming communications, customer reports, dogfood testing of new software and preparations for end of the fiscal year.  Oh, and I clean installed a copy of Windows Vista SP1 on to one of the family PCs: that was the easy part.  (More later on how a little Sandisk thumb drive saved my migrating email bacon – that was the tough part.)

First off, a few items on the IPhone, starting with this article on how at $199 the iPhone is “$160 More Expensive Than The $399 iPhone It Replaced. What?” — Consumerist says that “Apple’s new 3G iPhone might seem like a bargain at $199: more features, 3G speeds, and $200 cheaper than the original model. Great, except it’s not actually cheaper. The new $199 iPhone is actually $160 more than the $399 iPhone it replaces.”

Add to that the question in the article I found on Money’s site: “Will business buy the new iPhone?” (Jun. 19, 2008) — “Apple is taking a new corporate-friendly tact with the iPhone as it tries to convince companies that it means business about meeting their needs.” (By Jon Fortt and Michal Lev-Ram, June 20, 2008.)  And last, this commentary from The Register, “3G iPhone not ready for the enterprise?”, on the iPhone’s suitability for Enterprise use.

And finally, something that will save you money: Amazon.com has Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Software free after rebate — Get Windows Live OneCare 2.0 for free via mail-in rebate when you buy from Amazon.com. (Limit one per household.) Note that you must print out and redeem the form to receive your rebate.

Now, on to the list.

The old saying goes (circa 1993) that “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog” (yes, we had the Internet way back when… we used MS Mail, QuickMail and Mosaic for browsers).  Well, now days, on cable pay-per-view, no one can tell that you’re a dog. In this case, Time Warner customer billed $1,400 for PPV — Consumerist reports that Time Warner has billed a 60-year-old English teacher $1,400 for ordering PPV… “including 17 flicks supposedly viewed on a single day.” The customer was told “maybe your dog ordered them” by the TWC customer service agent. Amazing.

Op-Ed Contributor – Yes, We Will Have No Bananas – Op-Ed – NYTimes.com — DAN KOEPPEL of the Times says (June 18, 2008) “brace yourself… bananas reaching $1 a pound. The immediate reasons for the price increase are the rising cost of oil and reduced supply caused by floods in Ecuador, the world’s biggest banana exporter.  As the BBC, reported that “edible bananas may disappear within a decade if urgent action is not taken to develop new varieties resistant to blight.” Also of interest, see The BBC’s Tom Heap on how “Bananas are the world’s favourite fruit”, and Emile Frison, banana expert who said that the pending doom of banana “Extinction is a little bit exaggerated”

Exclusives: Powerpoint By Pissed Comcast Employee Reveals They Know Exactly How Much They Suck — It’s no secret to Consumerist readers that Comcast’s outsourced techs are often late, rude and incompetent, and that calling customer service is more akin to improving dialogue in a Beckett play, but as this exclusively powerpoint made by a Comcast employ

The time in Pakistan may not be what you think, Yahoo! and other bits from my reading pile

Sure, you could spend your free time creating a robot rock group as noted on MAKE, or you could try to figure out the current time in parts of Asia…

S. Asia clocks seem to be set to Twilight Zone (Seattle Times Newspaper) — Today, Pakistan becomes the first nation in South Asia to adopt daylight-saving time, pushing clocks forward by one hour. The three-month experiment is designed, as elsewhere, to cut energy costs by taking advantage of long summer days.

Whatever the case, summer arrives in a few days here in the Northern Hemisphere, and that means (hopefully) more time to catch up on some more serious reading than online fare. To paraphrase the recent Leonard Pitts Jr. column, giving online reading the day off, I have a stack of books, including Lincoln on Leadership by Donald T. Phillips, The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria, Wisdom of Our Fathers by Tim Russert (who died suddenly last week at the age of 58) and a host of classic titles we’ll read to the boys.

Have a good week ahead.

Mike Tholfsen’s new blog on OneNote what else I’ve read recently

Mike Tholfsen is an energetic and dedicated senior test manager at Microsoft, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with him in his effort to bring the message of Test Customer Champions to other engineering groups around the company.  Product groups who hear about the Test work in OneNote find the effort quite innovative.

image Earlier this year, Chris Pratley of Office Labs noted that Mike is a “OneNOte Ninja” (an honour of the highest order, I’m sure)…

“Another guy who’s doing a great job but isn’t blogging yet (he’s shy) is Mike Tholfsen. Mike is the test manager of the OneNote team, and he’s also a tireless (and I mean tireless) OneNote promoter inside Microsoft. You may remember Mike as the guy who wrote “My One and only OneNote“…

“What Mike has done is make a point of meeting with all the right executives, sales people, and so on to get across to them that OneNote can be more than a note-taking tool. He’s made videos internally and externally, like this one to show the power and ease of use of OneNote, in particular focusing recently on this “content distribution” aspect of OneNote to replace paper for green corporate or academic initiatives. He’s helped the Office marketing folks see this potential in OneNote too.”

And a personal (one)note: I use OneNote regularly in meetings and to help compile notes for projects, schedules and more.  Read about Mike and more in this week’s reading list.  To folks in the States: have a good long weekend… and for folks outside the States: now you know  why you’re seeing all the OOF messages on Monday…
