VentureBeat Interview with Robbie Bach on Zune

Of interest: VentureBeat interviewed Robbie Bach, President, Entertainment & Devices Division here at MS, the group responsible for Microsoft games, hardware (like mice, keyboards and Surface), Zune, Mac software, Xbox 360 and more.

This is the first of several parts, focusing on Zune… and my boys are particularly interested in this answer…

Q: The Xbox guys showed a demo of games running on the Zune. It seems like a very timid way to launch games on the Zune. It is like dipping your toe in the water, seeing if hobbyists will create games on the Zune. Compare that to the major effort Apple has under way to put games on the iPod.

A: The way you have to think about it is to ask whether Zune is just a portable music player or a portable entertainment player. We think of it more as a portable entertainment player. The point of demoing games is to show that games can run on that entertainment platform. We didn’t demo games running on some big service because there isn’t some big service to announce. But the idea is that Zune does music, video, photos, and it has the hardware to do very compelling games on it. It is more compelling than an iPod because it actually has a D-pad. From a gaming perspective, it is reasonably well suited. You can read a little or read a lot into it. The point is that we think of it as a portable entertainment device.

Zunes as seen by a child: “They’re a type of iPod… just bigger”

Out of the mouths of babes, or in this case our soon-to-be seven year old son.

Over dinner I asked…

CJ, what’s a Zune? [he uses a 30GB model for music and videos]

CJ: “Zune is a type of iPod, but it’s bigger.”

How is the Zune different from the iPod?

“The Zune is big, and the iPod is small.”

Which is cooler?

“The iPod… it’s for teenagers, and easier to hold.”

<sigh>

Kids say the darndest things.

CJ likes the iPod design so much that he built one out of Legos this week.

The Bill Gates keynote (with Robbie Bach) and other CES 2008 coverage

Microsoft at 2008 International CES


Bloggers and the press are out in force at CES in Las Vegas, tonite covering Bill Gates’ keynote at CES 2008.  You can find several entries listed here.  Check out video coverage at Microsoft’s CES site and on Microsoft PressPass.

So far, it’s just like being in Vegas, but with out the 24-hour flashing neon, long cab and restaurant lines, sleepy booth jockeys and uncomfortable hotels… and all from the comfort of my own home with free broadband access. 


And much quieter, too.


Our very own MSN Tech & Gadgets has a dedicated CES page along with the their spaces blog with posts from staff in Vegas (with the first photos of Playboy Bunnies, Hulk Hogan and tasers…;).  Engadget has great coverage on a CES-optimized page for their readers.  Daisuke Wakabayashi at Reuters covered the keynote as did Joseph Menn from the LA Times, and many blogger reports from CES here

Todd Bishop of the Seattle PI newspaper has an active Microsoft blog and tonite provides an overview of one of the keynote items: partnerships with content providers “including one with NBC to put video of the upcoming Olympics [see below] in Beijing exclusively on Microsoft’s MSN site.” He also notes the deal with MGM Studios to offer movies on Xbox Live Video, as well as with ABC Television, the Disney Channel offering programming from their channels.

“The company made the announcement via an article, which includes answers to reader questions by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, published by the BBC on Sunday…”


Want to ask Bill a question?  You can pose your own questions to Mr. Gates, so to speak, as posted on tech-buzz: Billg invited readers (of the BBC News) “to send him questions about his life and career. This invitation has been extended to readers from all over the world, and the timing could not have been more apt. You can send him questions on his life and career here.” The beeb will select some of the best questions and post the answers courtesy of Billg on their website and via television.


Also cool is the announcement that our Internet Protocol Television technology (IPTV) ‘Mediaroom’ is on more than a million set-top boxes worldwide. (As Bishop notes, IPTV technology delivers TV signals over phone lines.)  No mention of any new Xbox 360 hardware yet. 


C’mon… VUDU is listing their new XL for nearly a grand US (which is what, C$99 these days?;) and will debut their new Vudu XL movie vault that will hold “up to 500 full-length SD standard movies.” (Thanks, betanews.)  Surely we’ll see some more great announcements on the Media Center front when it comes to content and home theaters, right?


Now, back to the keynote: Todd Bishop also sat down and interviewed Billg just before the keynote where…



“Gates talked about the future of technology and discussed his plans as he prepares to go part time at the company later this year. He also defended Microsoft’s year-old Windows Vista operating system from critics and credited Nintendo’s Wii game console for its approachability — saying he expects Microsoft to “match that and do better.”


[Note: IMHO, “match that and do better” for starters should equal an Xbox 360 with a much quieter fan and disc drive than I have today in my black Xbox 360 Elite.  Another note: smaller and durable is also a good thing, too: to our boy’s delight, we traveled over the winter break with a Wii in my laptop carry-on bag, which included a laptop as well, power supply in the checked bag.]

At this year’s keynote, Ian Dixon posted here that Billg and Robbie Bach from E&D covered Vista customers (over 100 million served), Window Live bits, Surface, Silverlight, Xbox Live and Mediaroom (IPTV), Samsung’s new Media Center Extender and how in the UK customers will find the “the Xbox 360 as a IPTV client.” Add to that the numbers game: 10 million members strong on Xbox Live; 17.7 million Xbox 360 consoles sold so far (as x3sphere posted here); and 420 million Windows Live users worldwide. 

And another number: Gizmodo covers the 3,600 hours of the 2008 Olympic Games on MSN in Silverlight


“Bill Gates (and Bob Costas) announced that NBC would broadcast 3,600 hours of games from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics via MSN on the nbcolympics.com site. The video will be both live and on demand, with over 30 simultaneous live broadcasts. The cool thing is that finally, people who love ridiculous games like the hammer toss will get their fix, without upsetting the basketball fans who wouldn’t dare allow for a pre-emption.”


(Silverlight is a relatively small download: a whopping 2.6 MB which took less than a minute to install on my machine.)


Engadget thumbnailAs reported on Engadget, Zune will finally say ‘eh’ as it’s soon to be launched in Canada: perhaps I can then find some more Nash the Slash and Jane Siberry on Zune, too.  I hope that they do this before the next general election or no later than Canada Day: friends up north shouldn’t have to endure another Zuneless summer.


Todd Bishop also offers an edited transcript of the interview in his post — good reading — in addition to coverage of the keynote address here, as Gates came on stage with Slash, lately of of ‘Guitar Hero III’ fame…


“The night ended with Microsoft executive Robbie Bach challenging Gates to a “Guitar Hero” duel. After Bach brought out a “Guitar Hero” champion to stand in for him on the old Guns N’ Roses tune “Welcome to the Jungle,” Gates said he had a ringer, too: Slash, the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist…”


Mary Jo also posted that…


“the only truly futuristic technology that Gates showed during his hour-plus CES appearance was a piece of visual-recognition software under development by Microsoft Research that, some day, may be integrated into cell phones and other devices…

“I was hoping Gates would pull a Steve Jobs and say at the very end of his remarks, “We have one more thing…” and show off Windows Live “Horizon” or a sneak peek of Windows Mobile 7, or the “Pink and Purple” project’s Zune phone, or — heck, even just a glimpse of “Fiji.”


Hey, Mary Jo… it’s the early start to a long week.  Give it time. 😉

For our sons: Engadget provides a video look Guitar Wizard. Our kids are big on Guitar Hero on Xbox, and now the makers of the big hit at our house this Christmas —  I Can Play Guitar from Mattel — have this new teaching tool showing at CES.  Add to this Max is in his first year of real guitar lessons and Music Wizard’s Guitar Wizard looks like a great learning tool.  (More info here.)

$2 per month and other reasons why I’m leaving Blockbuster for Netflix

Thinking about a great last-minute gift that doesn’t require going to the mall or waiting for the FedEx driver to find your house?  Give a subscription to a DVD-by-mail service.


Better, give a Netflix subscription.  This from a for-the -moment Blockbuster Online subscriber.


Here’s the full story.


I like the ability to go online to the Blockbuster site and pick out movies for family viewing.  When we first signed up, we considered the monthly fee on par with about what we spend on visits to the retail store, on top of the video game rentals and miscellaneous purchases we make. And we chose Blockbuster as we already have a local store that the kids enjoy carousing through as they make their selections for a weekend evening movie night.


But the proverbial straw has landed on my back, and I’m about to contribute to what the industry calls “subscription churn.”


Translation: I am leaving Blockbuster “Total Access” online, DVD-by-mail service for Netflix.


In case you missed the news, Blockbuster is raising prices for their online service, which will mean an increase in the monthly cost for many (MSNBC estimates that increases of up to 40 percent will impact current customers and all new customers).  And the way the message was delivered to me was quite extraordinary:



“We know that during this busy time of year the convenience of BLOCKBUSTER Total Access is especially important to you. Have your movies delivered right to your door. If you want new movies right away, exchange in-store. And with free shipping both ways and no late fees, it’s easy to enjoy all the movies you want for as long as you want.


“To continue to bring you the unmatched convenience of both online and in-store DVD rentals, your monthly subscription fee will change slightly from $9.99 to $11.99.”


Uh, hello?  Care to explain what I am getting for the 20 percent jump?  No lament about the rise in processing and labour costs, postage increases or price of recycled paper in China?  The only thing I see in the mail is that it’s the same service, it just costs more.


It will be funny to see what impact a two-dollar-a-month increase will have on customers.


If my cable bill rose by 20 percent in one month, I might be prompted to move to an alternative.  If my mobile phone service rose by 20 percent, I might consider changing carriers.  


I’m surprised by this move after learning that Blockbuster lost in the neighbourhood of 500,000 online customers last calendar quarter. I enjoyed the privilege of being able to return movies back to my local store for a free exchange, but the additional cost outweighs the benefit when I think of the few times we actually used the service.

Also, no note in the email to me from Blockbuster of the options I have as a Blockbuster customer to downgrade my subscription to subscription-by-mail only. On the blockbuster site, I found references to the current $8.99 per month fee for mail-only, and read in the above article that the “basic plan that lets subscribers keep one DVD but doesn’t entitle them to free in-store exchanges will drop from $4.99 to $3.99 per month.” (After posting this entry, I found on the Blockbuster customer service page has more info on the price restructuring in order to learn more about the price increase.)

One of those may be better for us.  But I get a sense that this is a beginning of a slippery slope, and that the momentum and popularity of Netflix is added justification to make the move.

Not to mention that Netflix offers DVD by mail in addition to live customer service and movies over the Internet.  And with the hiring of my previous boss, Anthony Wood of ReplayTV fame, I expect more great things as Netflix looks for more innovative ways to deliver movies via the Internet, with rumours recently that the company is considering a $50 set-top box.



“Netflix has all but said that it will introduce some type of set-top box to get video to the TV. The company hired Replay TV founder Anthony Wood as its VP of Internet TV in April and in May, CFO Barry McCarthy said the company has been working on a solution for the last two years but wouldn’t discuss it’s “box strategy” until later this year or next.”


(Hmmm… CES is just around the corner… perfect timing for a Vudu-Netflix acquisition announcement.)

As much as I would rather see Xbox Live be the set-top box in our living room that provides over-the-Internet movies, I think that this will continue to be first and foremost a gaming platform, leaving a breadth of broadband movies to Vudu and companies like Tivo, DirecTV and Echostar. 

Nearly two years ago I predicted that as consumer broadband installations increase, subscription music packages (Rhapsody, Zune) would increase at a faster rate than online music sales (iTunes).  In that vein, I would like to see a monthly subscription video programme from Xbox Live, perhaps in combination with a company such as Netflix.  Full disclosure: Reed Hastings is on Microsoft’s board, and ‘though I have no insider knowledge of any such deal, it would be super to have a Netflix page on Xbox Live. 😉

It appears that the article in the Times was right: Netflix customer service is a strategic weapon against your DVD-mailing service… 


“Netflix’s decision to eliminate the e-mail feature was made after a great deal of research, Mr. Osier said. He looked at two other companies with reputations for superb phone-based customer service, Southwest Airlines and American Express, and saw that customers preferred human interaction over e-mail messages. “My assessment was that a world-class e-mail program was still going to be consistently lower in quality and effectiveness than a phone program,” he said.”


… And now, so is the price.

(A side bar: Netflix chose Oregon as the location for the customer service call centre as one exec “found Oregonians to be polite.”)

In defense, I should say that I have found the representatives at my local Blockbuster to be super helpful, once calling and holding for us a new, popular movie once it was returned by another customer.  But unlike Netflix, you can’t talk to a Blockbuster customer service agent, just send them an email through the Blockbuster online customer service web page.)

I agree with Thomas Hawk who wrote on his blog…


“Blockbuster has been in liquidation mode…

“For every store that goes out of business, it creates a big opportunity for Netflix to expand into their market. Blockbuster might be able to move some of these customers online, but the loss of the higher transaction revenue will certainly be felt as Antioco & Co. continue to dismantle the company piece by piece.”


Another sign of this: Shane Evangelist left Blockbuster Online for U.S. Auto Parts Network as Chief Executive Officer (as reported in this PR). Mr. Evangelist previously served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Blockbuster Online until this past October.  The role for managing the online business now falls to CIO Keith Morrow (as noted here), so he understands why a previously enthusiastic customer (one who also rented and purchased product in your retail stores) is leaving Blockbuster for Netflix.

BTW, interesting to note that Mr. Morrow is on Facebook (as am I).  Care to poke him with your opinion of the price increase? 😉

David Pogue delivers his review of the new Zune

A quick update before I head off to deliver a presentation…

David Pogue delivers his review of the new Zune in his review Microsoft gets better at carrying a Zune (International Herald Tribune).  He said that “the Zune has come a long way, with built-in FM radio and wireless autosyncing.”

“Microsoft might finally be getting the hang of hardware. The company’s overall track record for designing gadgets is pretty awful. Remember the Smart Display? The Spot Watch? The Ultra-Mobile PC? The original Zune?

Me neither.

But Microsoft’s new, second-generation Zune music/photo/video player is a pleasure to use. It fixes a long list of things that made the original Zune such a pathetic wannabe…

The Zune store is missing a lot of iPod features, too: TV shows, movies, audio books, monthly allowances and comprehensible pricing.

The bottom line: the iPod is still a more versatile, compact and beautiful machine, but the Zune has come a long way in very little time. Already, its potential audience is no longer limited to a sect of irrational Apple haters. It’s now a candidate for anyone who values its unique powers – excellent built-in FM radio, scratch-proof case and wireless autosyncing – more than they value the richness and choice of the iPod universe.
