Google determines I’m not me: the troubles with “real” identities

Love it. As noted in a prior post, Google doesn’t believe I’m me: the troubles with "real" identities. This started in mid August.

Today I found the following note from Google on my profile…

"After reviewing your profile, we determined that the name provided violates the Google+ Names Policy."

Really?

This from Google’s policy…

"Your common name is the name your friends, family or co-workers usually call you. For example, if your legal name is Charles Jones Jr. but you normally use Chuck Jones or Junior Jones, any of these would be acceptable."

Maybe Google should Bing it. Similar results on Google’s search site, too.

A benefit I’ve found at Microsoft over some of our competitors: our customer service staff if fairly accessible and responsive on various social media networks. For example, type in "microsoft support" in Twitter’s search box under "Who To Follow" and you’ll see several links to our service teams from many of our teams, including…

MicrosoftHelps – Official account for Microsoft Customer Service & Support

XboxSupport – Guinness World Record Holder: Most Responsive Brand on Twitter

ZuneSupport – Official Zune Support on Twitter

Oh, an interesting side note: Given Vic Gundotra’s first name is Vivek, I wonder if his profile would’ve been denied? 😉

Google doesn’t believe I’m me: the troubles with “real” identities

Google doesn’t believe I’m me.

Or so they told me today with a note that my profile has been suspended.

“It appears that the name you entered doesn’t comply with our Names
Policy
. The Names Policy requires that you use the name that you are commonly referred to
in real life in your profile. Nicknames, maiden names, and so on, should be
entered in the Other Names section of the profile. Profiles are currently
limited to individuals; we will be launching a profile for businesses and other
entities later this year.

“Your profile will be suspended until you do edit your name to comply with the Names
Policy: you will not be able to make full use Google services that require an
active profile, such as Google+, Buzz, Reader and Picasa. This will not prevent
you from using other Google services, like Gmail.

We understand that Google+ and it’s Names Policy may not be for everyone at
this time. We would hate to see you go, but if you choose to leave, make a copy of your
Google+ data first. Then, click here to leave Google+.”

Interesting, I’ve had my name since birth… and a lot longer than Google’s own corporate play on the word “googool.”

But I’ll let that slide for the moment.

Liz Gannes wrote about this in her article that looked at how Google & Facebook want to unify our identities w/ single account (theirs). http://dthin.gs/pMGyOg

(Full disclosure, something similar happened on Facebook but that was fixed… twice.)

Google’s Community Standards states that they encourage the use of what everyone knows you as, your “Cheer’s name” I’ll call it (“Hey, Norm!”)

“As part of our standards to help fight spam and prevent fake profiles, please use the name your friends, family or co-workers usually call you. For example, if your full legal name is Charles Jones Jr. but you normally use Chuck Jones or Junior Jones, either of those would be acceptable.”

No wonder then that they don’t go after folks named Bill, Andy, Buddy, JoeBob or Trip. Well, maybe Trip, but I’m sure that’s a Valley thing. 😉

If you believe Google “mistakenly suspended your profile for having an unauthentic name” you can fill out a form at https://www.google.com/support/profiles/bin/request.py?hl=en&contact_type=name_appeal (note that you should only use this form if directed from your profile.)

OK, let’s try this and see how it works.

I went ahead and filled out their form, providing my name, email address, Profile URL, and several pieces of “Additional Verification Information” including my ID, links on the web to a “reputable website.” I cited my links on Microsoft, Facebook, Bing and even Google’s own search engine (as much as I hated to use it ;).

For the record, you won’t find a lot of content on my Google profile: I use Windows Live, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for the most part in the social sphere. And no, no one twisted my arm to say that.

Link: How to change your name on Facebook (well, we’ll see)

Has facebook made you change your name to something other than your name?

Recently, an automated system on Facebook demanded that I change my name, after having provided details to them previously verifying my name. “

“The name contains invalid characters.”

Really? It’s not like my name is M& or M*. Or Mr. Mxyzptlk, ‘tho people have said they claim an impish resemblance.

And it turns out I would have plenty of relatives on facebook. 😉

A few years ago when I first joined FB, I thought that with people like my friends Trip, Bing and T, there wouldn’t be a problem with my name.

Wrong.

Customer service reached out to me and asked that I provide official confirmation of my name. (What, doesn’t everyone have digits in their name?) I did, they approved it and that was that.

That is, until one day last month when FB told me that I had to enter a new name else they would temporarily freeze access to my account. Which is why today I’m listed on FB as Mthree.

How frustrating. It seems that there are lots of frustrated users with other name changing issues unable to get anywhere with the social netowking giant, as noted here.

Rather than skirt the system and contact people I know at FB, I decided to use their available support systems, initially submitting a support request. Nada.

A few weeks ago, I sent a letter to their customer service department in Palo Alto. Nothing.

So, after a little searching, I found the support page that allows you to contact a real person: http://on.fb.me/evYoJR:

I Need to Change My Name

Facebook requires all members to provide their real first and last names. Please provide the following information to help us verify your name.

Keep in mind that profiles are for personal use only. If you are trying to change your account name in order to represent a business or organization, or to represent yourself as a public figure, you should create a Page.

We’ll see if it works…
